During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
